Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, lies on the Rio Grande in front of the Sandia Mountains. It is famous for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, when in October hundreds of hot-air balloons fill the sky. But the city has its own desert charm otherwise too: a historic old town in adobe style, the old Route 66 running right through the city and one of the longest gondolas in the world up into the mountains.

The Balloon Fiesta

The big event is the Balloon Fiesta in early October, the largest hot-air balloon festival in the world. At the morning mass ascension, hundreds of colorful balloons rise together. Anyone coming then should book hotels many months in advance.

Old Town

The historic center is the Old Town from the 18th century, with the old plaza, the San Felipe church and small shops in adobe style. Most beautiful in the late morning, when life sets in.

Sandia Peak and Route 66

With the Sandia Peak Tramway, one of the longest gondolas in the world, you float up to over 9,840 ft (3,000 m), with a wide view over the desert. The legendary Route 66 runs through the city as Central Avenue, with old neon signs and diners.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

Albuquerque or rather Santa Fe?

For a long time Santa Fe was the clearly more rewarding destination in the forum, with Albuquerque a sprawling big city with little appeal. Now voices are speaking up who find Albuquerque underrated, above all for the New Mexican cuisine, the area around Nob Hill and of course the Balloon Fiesta and Sandia Peak.

How much time does Sandia Peak need?

About half a day, on that the community agrees unanimously. You ride the gondola up, can walk around a bit at the top and enjoy the difference in climate. The most important condition is calm, clear weather.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

If you're coming for the Balloon Fiesta, book your hotel early. Prices in Albuquerque climb the closer you get to the dates, and the last rooms go for outrageous money. Booking ahead actually pays off here, for once.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

For Sandia Peak, keep an eye on the wind and weather. The tramway doesn't run in strong gusts, and a cloudy day hides the whole view up top. Better to leave your timing flexible.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Try the New Mexican food in Old Town, that's really the culinary draw here. Central Avenue heading toward Nob Hill also has a nice Route 66 vibe with good places to eat.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Instead of just walking around Old Town, drive up the Sandia Crest Scenic Byway. On a clear day you get a great view over the city and the surrounding country from up there.

What travellers experienced on the spot.

I found Old Town quite nice, though I was there pretty early in the morning, when it was still fairly deserted.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

We deliberately kept the days in Santa Fe and Albuquerque free to explore the area at our leisure.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The Balloon Fiesta in October is a highly impressive experience and like a big fair. For a whole week hundreds of balloons go up every morning, plus special shapes like Darth Vader, a zebra or a roadrunner.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

For the mass ascension the alarm rang at five, it was pitch dark and really cold. We needed our long underwear. But when the first balloons rose around half past six, the early hour was immediately forgotten.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

I was strongly advised to take the gondola up Sandia Peak. At first I thought it was a cheesy affair, but up top it was really great, if only for the difference in climate.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

I was quickly done with Old Town, there is not that much beyond the New Mexican cuisine. Albuquerque made a rather deserted impression on me overall, many closed shops.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

When our Sandia Peak ride was canceled due to strong wind, we spontaneously drove to the Petroglyph National Monument on the edge of town. Over 20,000 rock carvings of the native peoples, a good backup plan.

Insider tips and common mistakes

What was worth it and what to skip.

Insider tips

  • For the Balloon Fiesta get up early, the mass ascension in the morning is the highlight.
  • Do not visit Old Town too early, in the late morning there is more going on.
  • Ride up with the Sandia Peak Tramway, it is cooler at the top and the view is wide.

Common mistakes

  • Booking too late for the Balloon Fiesta, the hotels are then long full and expensive.
  • Seeing Albuquerque only as a stopover, Old Town and Sandia deserve their own time.
  • Underestimating the altitude, the city lies over 4,920 ft (1,500 m), on Sandia much higher still.
