Fort Myers in southwest Florida is more relaxed and tropical than the cities further north, a city of palms on the Caloosahatchee River. It is known as the winter home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose neighboring estates can be visited today. Add to that the broad Fort Myers Beach and the closeness to the islands of Sanibel and Captiva.

Edison & Ford Winter Estates

The cultural center is the winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, right next to each other on the river. Historic houses, Edison's laboratory and a botanical garden tell of two of America's greatest inventors.

Beaches and islands

Fort Myers Beach has broad sand and shallow water for swimming. Just offshore lie Sanibel and Captiva, world famous for shell collecting and perfect for a day trip.

Relaxed south Florida

Here the clocks tick more slowly. Palms, boat docks and sunsets over the Gulf shape the picture, along with elegant Naples just under an hour to the south.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

Is a stay of its own in Naples worthwhile, or is Fort Myers enough as a base?

Many say Naples is only about 45 miles from Fort Myers and works well as a day trip. But those who like a tranquil place with a pier really enjoyed Naples as an overnight stop. Both are reasonable, and staying in just one place saves you constant unpacking.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

Do a kayak tour with manatee guides. They run year-round and you'll see manatees, dolphins, turtles, and plenty of other animals in the wild. Swimming with manatees isn't allowed in Fort Myers and Lee County, but the tour is well worth it.

For lodging, the area between Naples and Fort Myers is handy, for example Estero right next to the Miromar Outlets. Very quiet, close to the lovely Barefoot Beach and Bonita Beach.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Definitely plan a side trip to Sanibel Island and visit the J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge there, ideally by bike. It's more fun than doing it by car.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

For shopping around Fort Myers, the Miromar Outlets in Estero and the Tanger Outlet just before the bridge to Sanibel are worth it.

Flying in from Düsseldorf gets you a direct flight to Fort Myers. The airport is very pleasant, and the legs within Florida are never much of a problem, since you're mostly driving along the coast and can always pull over for a swim.

Voices from the community

What travellers experienced on the spot.

Fort Myers and the west coast are among my favorite corners of Florida, and Edison's winter home there is really interesting.

from personal experience

Fort Myers Beach with the Edison House is very interesting, and Sanibel Island is a dream.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

From Fort Myers I would definitely add Sanibel Island.

I really like the airport in Fort Myers, because you do not first have to take a shuttle to the rental car stations. I find it very pleasant for arriving and departing.

We were in the Fort Myers area and looked at the Edison House, the Edison Ford Winter Estates. A very lovely site and really interesting, what this man invented. The tour is great fun because the guides are so full of enthusiasm.

At Lover Key State Park near Fort Myers we found a really great beach, not too crowded. If you want to look for shells, you will find even more here than on Sanibel. We were lucky enough to see dolphins right up close in the water, a wonderful experience.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Florida in November is the best time to travel for me. It is nice and warm, but not too hot, and there are hardly any mosquitoes. That said, you notice whether you are in the south. From Fort Myers and further south you will definitely have swimming weather, further north not necessarily.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In downtown Fort Myers, in Centennial Park, stands the sculpture of the three gentlemen Ford, Edison and Firestone, the Uncommon Friends statues. Edison and Ford really did live next to each other here.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Around Fort Myers and Cape Coral, tourism has in places taken on almost Majorca-like proportions, with German hotels, bakeries and restaurants. That is why we have so far rather avoided this corner.
