Fort Myers in southwest Florida is more relaxed and tropical than the cities further north, a city of palms on the Caloosahatchee River. It is known as the winter home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose neighboring estates can be visited today. Add to that the broad Fort Myers Beach and the closeness to the islands of Sanibel and Captiva.

Edison & Ford Winter Estates
The cultural center is the winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, right next to each other on the river. Historic houses, Edison's laboratory and a botanical garden tell of two of America's greatest inventors.
Beaches and islands
Fort Myers Beach has broad sand and shallow water for swimming. Just offshore lie Sanibel and Captiva, world famous for shell collecting and perfect for a day trip.
Relaxed south Florida
Here the clocks tick more slowly. Palms, boat docks and sunsets over the Gulf shape the picture, along with elegant Naples just under an hour to the south.
