For a normal vacation, as a German citizen you don't need a visa, just an electronic travel authorization, the ESTA. Usually this is straightforward. But one thing is important: entry requirements change frequently and sometimes at short notice. What's written here is only a rough guide. Before your trip, always rely on the official authorities, which I link in the box above.
What is ESTA
ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It is part of the Visa Waiver Program and allows tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. An approved authorization is generally valid for two years and for multiple entries, as long as your passport is valid.
Only through the official site
Apply for the ESTA exclusively through the official government site esta.cbp.dhs.gov. There are many expensive third-party providers that only add a service fee on top. The official fee was raised significantly in 2025 and was most recently around 40 US dollars per person. It may change again; you'll see the current amount when filling out the form on the official site.
Take care of it in time
It's best to apply for the ESTA right after booking your flight, at the latest a few days before departure. Without an approved ESTA, the airline won't even let you board the plane. Processing usually takes only minutes, but it can take up to 72 hours.
When an ESTA isn't enough
You only need an actual visa in special cases, such as longer stays, for work or study, or when previous trips to certain countries come into play. Here too, only the information from the US Embassy counts. Plan this step early, visa appointments can take time.
