A road trip through the USA often crosses several climate zones in a single day. With the right gear you are ready for anything without hauling too much around.
Power and tech
The USA uses different outlets and 110 volts. Bring a travel adapter, ideally one with several USB ports. A power bank, charging cables, and a phone mount for navigation belong in your bag too.
Dress in layers
Hot during the day, cool in the evenings and at altitude, plus heavily air-conditioned rooms. Dress in layers. A light jacket or sweater belongs in your luggage even in summer, as do comfortable, broken-in hiking shoes.
Sun protection is a must
In the desert and at altitude the sun is merciless. High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a refillable water bottle are not a luxury but essential.
Documents and money
Passport, ESTA approval, driver's license, a credit card with no foreign transaction fee, and the details of your travel health insurance. Keep a copy of the most important documents stored separately.
What you don't need
A hairdryer, towels, and soap are provided at the hotel. You can buy plenty of things cheaply on site, so don't overpack.
