Cape Canaveral on Florida's Atlantic coast is the USA's spaceport. From here the Apollo missions flew to the Moon and the Space Shuttles into space, and today the rockets of NASA and SpaceX launch from here. The centerpiece for visitors is the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, an experience somewhere between museum and theme park. Right next door, Cocoa Beach offers a relaxed surfer town for staying overnight and swimming.

The highlight is the original Space Shuttle Atlantis, up close and impressively staged, along with the mighty Saturn V Moon rocket, the Rocket Garden and a bus tour across the grounds. Since 2025 the tour also leads up to an observation tower with a view of the launch pads. Plan a whole day.

Watching a launch

With a little luck and planning you can see a rocket launch, SpaceX now launches frequently. The launch dates are online, and you get a good view even from Cocoa Beach or Titusville.

Cocoa Beach

The wide sandy beach of Cocoa Beach is the classic place to stay in the area, with surfers, the long pier and the enormous Ron Jon Surf Shop. Relaxed, down to earth and close to the Space Center.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

Give yourself enough time and book one of the extended tours like the Up Close or the Vehicle Assembly Building tour. Half a day is nowhere near enough.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

The Kennedy Space Center sits perfectly on the way from Orlando toward Cocoa Beach or Miami, so it works well as a stop along the way.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

To get to the Kennedy Space Center you take the Beeline, which is a toll road. There are mostly toll-free routes too, only the drive over the bridge costs a few dollars, and it's worth it.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Hide your credit card beforehand or hand it to your travel companion: the souvenir shop is not to be underestimated and tempts you to spend money.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Feel free to plan a whole day, you can easily spend several hours to a full day there. If you only do the small bus tour, you'll find that plenty interesting too.

What travellers experienced on the spot.

I can only recommend the Kennedy Space Center.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The thing with the Kennedy Space Center strikes me as wild: it used to cost nothing at all, and by now you pay admission as at a theme park.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

My birthday at the Kennedy Space Center will stay in my memory for a long time. The Saturn V is set in scene wonderfully, typically American, with goosebumps guaranteed when you step out of the pre-shows beneath the real engines and walk along the rocket.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

We had booked the Up Close, or rather Vehicle Assembly Building, tour. There, in a niche, invisible until you stood right in front of it, was the real Space Shuttle Endeavour, waiting for its new task as a museum spacecraft. We got up really close.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The bus tour is really a must. We saw the Rocket Garden, the Space Shuttle Explorer, the Apollo/Saturn V Center and the Discovery. Unfortunately the Space Shuttle could not launch on time back then, that would have been the absolute highlight.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In 2006 we had the enormous luck to witness a night launch of the Discovery. Absolutely mind-blowing. Even from ten kilometers away we had the feeling that the ground was quaking and shaking.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

It is a shame that the Shuttle program was discontinued and no more launches take place in Florida. On our visit we had to make do with the track marks in the special gravel from the last launch.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Unfortunately we only had half a day, which was far too short, so we missed quite a bit. When we come to Florida again this is definitely on the program once more.
