Las Vegas

One night is enough, and it packs a punch.

Las Vegas is loud, garish and utterly over the top, and that is exactly the point. In the middle of the desert stands a city that consists almost entirely of show, with replica pyramids, half of Venice and fountains that dance to music.

The Strip

Las Vegas Boulevard, the Strip for short, is the center. Along around six kilometers the big themed hotels line up, from the Bellagio to the Venetian to Caesars Palace. In the evening walk the mile once, look into the lobbies, take in the glitter. But do not underestimate the distances, the Strip is longer than it looks.

Downtown and Fremont Street

It gets older, quirkier and cheaper Downtown around Fremont Street, under a huge canopy of lights. For many that is the more original side of Vegas.

A contrast to the desert

After days in the quiet nature of the Southwest, Vegas is a stark contrast. See the madness once, and for most people that is enough again. Anyone seeking calm is in the wrong place here, anyone who wants everything at once for once is exactly right.

The perfect start or finish

The city is above all handy as the beginning or end of a Southwest loop. The airport is large, the rental cars are often cheapest, and Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon and the national parks are easy to reach from here.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

How many nights in Vegas?

Almost unanimous in the forum: one, at most two. Vegas is intense, after that most people have had enough. Ideal as the start or finish of a Southwest loop, not as the main destination.

Stay on the Strip or Downtown?

The Strip for the big spectacle right in the middle, Downtown for cheaper, more compact and more original. Anyone coming for the first time usually wants to experience the Strip.

Is Vegas worth it at all?

Split. For some the highlight, for others too loud and garish. As a contrast after the quiet desert, though, most find it an experience to have seen once.

Which show is worth it in Vegas?

In the forum the Cirque du Soleil productions are right at the top, above all the Beatles show Love at the Mirage and the water spectacle O. A tip from the community: even the cheaper seats higher up often offer the better overall view of the effects.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

Look for coupons for the buffets. Many places have online discounts that make a good buffet noticeably cheaper. Just take a look before your trip.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Compare show tickets in advance. The hotel websites sometimes have deals, but prices swing a lot, so a quick price comparison almost always pays off.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Buying tickets in advance with a foreign credit card can be glitchy. If you want to play it safe, buy the show tickets at the hotel box office once you're there.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

A casino's Players Club is mainly worth it if you play a lot at one place. If you only gamble a bit here and there and roam through the casinos, you probably don't need it.

Voices from the community

What travellers experienced on the spot.

After two weeks of desert and silence, Vegas was a total contrast. We marvelled for one night, and that was exactly enough.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The Bellagio fountains at night surprised us, free and really beautiful. We stood there a long time.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Do not forget the resort fees. What looked cheap ended up costing considerably more than expected.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The Beatles show Love at the Mirage was simply fantastic. We had the cheapest seats right at the top and still the best overview of the light effects on the floor.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The Orleans Buffet a little off the Strip is cheap and really good. We drove there specially in the morning by car. At the Tropicana, on the other hand, I would never eat again, expensive, cramped and no choice.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

One of the Cirque du Soleil shows is simply part of it for us. The tickets are not cheap, often over 50 dollars per person plus fees, but the experience is worth it.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

For shopping Vegas is a paradise. Premium Outlet North and South, plus the big malls and the shopping arcades in Caesars Palace and the Venetian, you can spend a whole day there.

Where to stay

On the Strip

right in the thick of it

The big resorts like the Bellagio, Venetian or MGM. Right in the middle, but more expensive and with resort fees. Watch the total price.

Downtown

Fremont Street

Classic casino hotels, cheaper and more compact. For many the more original Vegas.

Off the Strip

a few minutes away

Chain hotels without a casino, often much cheaper and quieter, quick to reach the Strip by car.

Insider tips and common mistakes

What was worth it and what to skip.

Insider tips

  • The Bellagio fountains are free and run every 15 to 30 minutes, most beautiful after nightfall.
  • Do not plan to walk the whole Strip, it is kilometers long. The Deuce bus or a short taxi saves your feet.
  • Take Vegas as the start of the trip, then the rental cars are often cheapest.

Common mistakes

  • Overlooking the resort fees. Often 30 to 50 USD per night are added on top of the room rate.
  • Walking around outside on the Strip for a long time at midday in high summer. Over 40°C (104°F) is normal here.
  • Staying too long. Vegas is intense, after one or two nights most people have had enough.
