Mount Rainier rises at almost 14,435 ft (4,400 m) as the highest peak of the Cascades over the Northwest. The glacier-covered volcano can be seen even from Seattle and, in clear weather, is visible from far away. Its national park protects blooming mountain meadows, old forests, waterfalls and glaciers. The centerpiece is the Paradise area, which in high summer sinks into a sea of wildflowers.

Paradise and the flower meadows

The most famous part is called Paradise: in July and August the mountain meadows bloom in front of the white volcano. Many trails start from here.

Hiking on the mountain

Trails like the Skyline Trail lead to viewpoints overlooking glaciers and valleys. Those who want more circle the whole mountain on the long Wonderland Trail. Short walks are worthwhile too.

Weather and visibility

The mountain makes its own weather and often hides in the clouds. In clear weather it can be seen from far away. The chances are best in summer in the morning and late afternoon.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

Mount Rainier or Mount St. Helens, if there is only time for one?

No clear winner in the forum. Rainier you see from afar anyway in good visibility and experience it on a hike in Paradise, while St. Helens scores with the visitor center and the view of the crater from Johnston Ridge.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

The best way to experience the mountain is a hike around the Paradise Visitor Center. Just bear in mind that up here you can get fresh snow as early as September.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Get to Paradise early. The parking lots fill up fast, and then you get turned away and lose time.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Mount Rainier lies southeast of Seattle and only about 50 miles away. It works well as a day trip or as the first stop on a Northwest loop.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

If you have to choose between Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens, decide by your interests. You can get closer to Rainier for a mountain hike, while St. Helens impresses with the eruption story at Johnston Ridge.

Voices from the community

What travellers experienced on the spot.

You must not miss Mount Rainier, in good weather incredibly impressive and simply magnificent.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Seen from afar, Rainier is a fascinatingly beautiful mountain that you get to see anyway in good visibility.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In summer you see Rainier best in the early morning or the late afternoon.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

And then there it stood, simply gigantic, so close and yet so far away. The first eye contact with Mount Rainier is a moment you do not forget.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In the park there were once again far too many stops. Christine Falls, Narada Falls, Paradise, Inspiration Point and the Reflection Lakes, in one day you can hardly get enough.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

At the Reflection Lakes we unfortunately had no reflections, the mountain stayed behind clouds. As beautiful as the spot is, a bit of luck with the weather is part of it.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

During our visit thick smoke from the wildfires lay over the valley and badly obstructed the view of the mountain. In late summer that is unfortunately not rare.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The contrast was harsh. First the quiet mountain world at Rainier, then down through endless forests and, on Interstate 5, straight into the traffic jam and the crush of Seattle.
