Yosemite shows California at its most magnificent. At the center lies Yosemite Valley, a valley enclosed by granite walls up to a thousand meters high, with a river meandering through it. Above it all tower Half Dome and El Capitan, the most famous rocks in the climbing world. Add thundering waterfalls in early summer and ancient giant sequoias. No wonder Yosemite is regarded as the cradle of American conservation.

The Yosemite Valley

The valley is the heart of the park and reachable all year. From the famous Tunnel View you take in the whole panorama at a glance: El Capitan on the left, Bridalveil Falls on the right, Half Dome in the background. Within the valley you move comfortably from point to point on foot or with the free shuttle.

Waterfalls and the best time

The waterfalls, above all Yosemite Falls, thunder most powerfully in May and June, when the snowmelt feeds them. In late summer many dry up almost completely. If you want to see water, come in early summer.

High roads only in summer

The high-elevation roads like the Tioga Road and the turnoff to Glacier Point are only open from around late May to October, a recurring topic in the forum. If you come in spring, plan for that.

Expect the crowds

Yosemite is popular and busy in summer. In peak season there is at times a reservation system for entry. Come early, park early, or stay in the park itself.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

When is Yosemite at its best?

In the forum clearly May and June, when the waterfalls thunder from the snowmelt. In late summer many are almost dry.

Is the valley enough or are the heights worth it?

The valley is the heart and there all year. The Tioga Road and Glacier Point are magnificent, but only open in summer, which spring travelers often miss.

How bad are the crowds?

Busy in summer, with an entry reservation at times. Early in the morning or midweek is more relaxed, and staying in the park helps.

Is a short day in Yosemite enough or do you have to stay overnight?

In the forum they say you will have seen something even with three quarters of a day passing through. But those who really want to experience the park plan two nights in or by the park.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

Set aside time for the big trees. If Mariposa Grove is closed, the Tuolumne Grove on Tioga Road or the small, secluded Merced Grove on Big Oak Flat Road are good alternatives.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

If you're coming from the east, stay in Oakhurst rather than Mariposa. Glacier Point and Mariposa Grove are along Highway 41, which saves a lot of driving the next day.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Don't drive too fast on the road through the park. Right at the entrance on Highway 120 the local sheriff likes to lurk in the bushes.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Don't leave Glacier Point for the second day, or the round trip up from the valley eats up too much time. Better to head up right on your arrival day, if the road is open.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Campgrounds like Bridalveil Creek have to be reserved through recreation.gov, and within a tight booking window. Lovely, but remote, a good 45 minutes down into the valley.

Voices from the community

What travellers experienced on the spot.

Yosemite Valley is enclosed by walls up to a thousand meters high, it is regarded as the cradle of the American climbing scene. Standing down below is overwhelming.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In March the Tioga Road and Glacier Point were still closed, you have to plan for that. The valley itself was dreamlike and almost empty though.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

At Tunnel View we stood almost alone early on, an hour later it was tour bus after tour bus. Getting up early really pays off here.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

If you have little time, drive in over the Tioga Pass in the morning and head back out towards Mariposa in the early evening. Even then you will have seen quite a bit, but two nights right in or by the park is nicer.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

I have climbed Half Dome a few times, it is very much worth it. Back in the eighties you were still all alone up there, but by now it gets quite crowded even there. Nothing works without respect for the steel cables.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

One night in the park cost us 129 dollars for a tiny cabin, we did not want to put ourselves through a second night after all. You have to book the lodging in the valley months ahead and it is still no bargain.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Just before the valley on Big Oak Flat Road there is a sensational viewpoint, where the whole valley with waterfalls, El Capitan and Half Dome spreads out in front of you. For that alone the entry from this side is worth it.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In March we experienced Yosemite in two completely different ways. Once lonely and quiet in clear winter air with a wonderful atmosphere, once as a wash house in the fog where you could barely see your hand in front of your face.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

We did Glacier Point in dull weather and looked into the fog, that was quite a disappointment. On the second attempt it cleared up and the view of Half Dome and the waterfalls was incomparable.

Insider tips and common mistakes

What was worth it and what to skip.

Insider tips

  • Come in May or June, that is when the waterfalls thunder most powerfully.
  • The Tunnel View early in the morning, before the tour buses roll in.
  • Use the free valley shuttle instead of hunting for parking spots yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Firmly planning on the closed high roads (Tioga, Glacier Point) in spring. They only open in summer.
  • Coming in late summer for the waterfalls, when many are almost dry.
  • Arriving in peak season without a reservation, for entry as well as for a bed.
