On the road in the USA you'll usually stay in motels and hotels. It's straightforward, but a few things make it cheaper and more relaxed.
Motel or hotel
The classic motel sits along the through road, where you park right in front of your room door, ideal for road trips with a lot of luggage. Hotels are a bit more comfortable and are often more centrally located. For a road trip, the big, reliable chains like Best Western, Holiday Inn, La Quinta, or Motel 6 are a safe bet.
Book ahead or spontaneously
In cities, at popular national parks, and in high season you should book ahead, otherwise it gets expensive or full. On flexible routes you can stay spontaneously and book from your phone in the evening. Lodges right inside the national parks, on the other hand, are booked out months in advance, so be early there.
Watch the extra costs
The displayed price is rarely the final price. On top come the local tax and, at many hotels, a daily resort fee that isn't listed in the room rate. When in doubt, ask for the total price. More on this in the article on money and tipping.
Practical tips for your stay
Check-in is usually from the afternoon, check-out in the late morning. Breakfast is simply included at many motels. A small tip for housekeeping is customary. If you prefer to be close to nature, you'll find good campgrounds in and around the parks, which also book out early.
