Atlanta is the secret capital of the American South: young, diverse and forever changing. This big city in Georgia has no old postcard motifs, but it does have a gleaming skyline and a history that shaped the whole country. Martin Luther King was born here, this is the birthplace of Coca-Cola, and one of the largest airports in the world sits here, often the gateway into the entire Southeast.

Civil rights history

In the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park around Auburn Avenue you can see his birthplace, his church and his tomb. An impressive, moving chapter of American history.

The realm of Coca-Cola

At the World of Coca-Cola everything revolves around the most famous brand in the world, invented here in 1886. Right next door lies the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world.

Green and on the move

Atlanta is surprisingly green and is reinventing itself right now. The Atlanta BeltLine, an old railway line, is today a long park and cycle path, lined with street art, cafes and up-and-coming neighborhoods.

Gateway to the Southeast

With its huge airport, Atlanta is for many the entry point into the Southeast, and from here the Smokies, Savannah and Nashville are all easy to reach.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

Is Atlanta worth a stay or just a stopover city?

Opinions clearly diverge here. Some found Atlanta not very appealing and think one day is enough. Others found the city lovely and happily filled two days with Coca-Cola, MLK, the aquarium and Stone Mountain. A matter of taste, but there is plenty worth seeing.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

Two days are enough for the city itself to comfortably fit in Stone Mountain Park, the Martin Luther King Memorial, the Aquarium, and the World of Coca-Cola.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Stone Mountain Park is a bit outside the city and has a lot going on. With kids you can easily fill a whole day there.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Hotels in Downtown are often pricey, but you can find good deals through Priceline. Central and within walking distance of the Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola is the Marriott Marquis.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Atlanta's airport has a bad reputation, but it's huge and still well organized. A lot of people find it very pleasant for connecting, and there's an automated passport control that's very fast if you have an ESTA and have entered the country before.

Voices from the community

What travellers experienced on the spot.

Atlanta is my favorite place to stay in the South. You really should do the Martin Luther King Museum, and Stone Mountain Park just outside the city is a great day out.

from personal experience

Atlanta, and Georgia in general, is definitely one of the most beautiful corners I have ever seen.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Expectations of Atlanta are not high, but even the skyline is fascinating.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

We did not find Atlanta ugly at all. We spent two full days there, saw the World of Coca-Cola, the Martin Luther King Museum and the Margaret Mitchell House, a must for Gone with the Wind fans, and strolled a little through the city.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Just before Atlanta we turned off to Stone Mountain, the largest rock relief in the world. The cable car takes you to the summit, from where you can see all the way to Atlanta. A great destination where you can easily spend a whole day.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The Georgia Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world with over 100,000 animals. The stars are the four whale sharks, along with manta rays, big hammerhead sharks and beluga whales. You can view the huge tank through a glass tunnel.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

In Atlanta the Martin Luther King Historic Site was an absolutely impressive experience, a piece of history you can touch, especially for children.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

For the World of Coca-Cola we had booked the VIP tour. You can park cheaply all day in the Coca-Cola garage, and nearby are Pemberton Park and Centennial Olympic Park for a stroll.

Insider tips and common mistakes

What was worth it and what to skip.

Insider tips

  • Visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Park early, when it is quieter and more moving.
  • Explore a stretch of the Atlanta BeltLine on foot or by bike, the young, green Atlanta.
  • The aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola sit side by side, easily done in half a day.

Common mistakes

  • Seeing Atlanta only as an airport stopover. The city has more to offer than you might think.
  • Planning everything on foot. The neighborhoods lie far apart, a car or the rail helps.
  • Skipping the civil rights history, it is the heart and soul of the city.
