Savannah is regarded by many as the most beautiful city in the American South. Georgia's oldest city has kept its historic core completely intact: a grid of 22 green squares, lined with grand town houses and old oaks from which gray Spanish moss hangs. Add cobblestones by the river, old warehouses full of restaurants and a cosiness that is contagious.

The Historic District
The heart is the Historic District with its 22 squares, small parks full of monuments and fountains under the canopy of leaves. The best known is Forsyth Park with its fountain. It is best explored slowly on foot.
River Street
Along the Savannah River runs River Street, a row of restored cobblestone warehouses, today full of shops, restaurants and bars. This is also where the big riverboats dock.
Southern cuisine and history
Savannah is known for its Southern cuisine, from shrimp and grits to pecan pie. And for its history: the city was spared in the Civil War and to this day shows the old South, including the Gullah Geechee culture of the coast.
Oak avenues in the surrounding area
A little outside lie well-known oak avenues like the one at Wormsloe, kilometer-long tunnels of moss-hung trees. A photo subject straight out of a film.
