Everglades

Endless wetlands full of alligators, best explored by airboat.

The Everglades are a huge, flat wetland in the south of Florida, a slowly flowing sea of sawgrass that is called the River of Grass. Alligators, turtles, many birds and manatees live here. For Florida travelers a tour here is a classic, most striking of all by airboat, which glides across the shallow water.

The airboat tour

The most important thing is the ride on an airboat, a flat boat with a big propeller at the back that whizzes across the shallow water. Several operators start from the Tamiami Trail west of Miami. You usually do not need to reserve, just drive over and ask about the next tour.

Alligators and wildlife

You will practically always see a few alligator eyes above the surface of the water. Along with herons, anhingas, turtles and, with luck, manatees. On short boardwalks like the Anhinga Trail you get close to the wildlife on foot too.

When to go

In summer it is hot, very humid and full of mosquitoes. More pleasant is the dry season from December to April. Then the animals gather at the remaining water holes and are easy to see.

The big questions from the forum

What was discussed most on USA-TALK.DE, with the community verdict.

Does an airboat tour make sense with small children?

In the forum the warning prevails that the airboats are very loud and can be too loud for toddlers. For families, quiet alternatives like a walk on the Anhinga Trail are recommended instead.

Practical tips from the forum

Concrete advice from travellers who were there.

Check the local tourist papers you find around town, they usually have coupons for the airboat tours that save you a few dollars. In the Everglades there's one operator after another, so just trust your gut.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Instead of Interstate I-75, take the Tamiami Trail (US 41). You'll see more of the Everglades and pass several airboat operators right along the way.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Sign up for the Tram Tour at Shark Valley early at the Visitor Center, ideally right when you arrive. The tours book up fast.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Don't drive the Tamiami Trail after dark. There's a lot of wildlife crossing, and from dusk on you can only crawl along.

from the USA-TALK.DE forum

Coopertown runs the classic route through the sawgrass, while other operators, like the ones in Everglades City, mostly go through the mangroves. Pick whichever landscape appeals to you more.

You don't need an off-road vehicle for the Loop Road, an ordinary sedan gets through there just fine.

Voices from the community

What travellers experienced on the spot.

I usually take in the Everglades on the way from Miami to the lovelier west coast of Florida, toward Fort Myers or Sarasota. But you can also do them as a separate trip from Miami.

from personal experience

I never drove there with a reservation, just went over and asked when the next airboat tour started. You pretty much always see a few alligator eyes. A nice attraction that you should take in.

from personal experience

In the Everglades the trails right at the start of the park are great, we especially liked the Anhinga Trail.

We did an airboat tour at the Everglades Safari Park, where you see the odd alligator lying in the water right next to you.

The Everglades were great. Despite being advised against it, we drove all the way to Flamingo and took a boat trip there. The what felt like a hundred mosquito bites are slowly starting to stop itching now, but it was worth it.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

An airboat tour is simply part of a Florida holiday. The things are dead loud, but it really is fun. At the Sawgrass Recreation Park our tour was really top notch.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

On the roadside of the Tamiami Trail we already saw big specimens of alligators in the canals before we even reached an operator. At Joannie's Blue Crab Cafe with the red wooden facade you can even try alligator meat.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

At the operator Coopertown we were honestly not convinced at all, we did not even lay eyes on a single alligator there. At another operator they really made an effort and the tour was far better.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

Our favorite was the Anhinga Trail at the entrance near Homestead. You will hardly find more animals on such a short trail. The tip to split the Everglades over two days I thought was great and took it straight into the route planning.

from the forum USA-TALK.DE

The tram tour to the observation tower in Shark Valley is fun. There were incredibly many alligators to see, we had never seen so many before.

Small, quiet town right at the park, for anyone who wants to be very close to nature.

Insider tips and common mistakes

What was worth it and what to skip.

Insider tips

  • Do not necessarily book in advance. At the operators on the Tamiami Trail you can often simply join the next tour.
  • Combine the Everglades with the drive along Florida's west coast, which many find lovelier than the east coast.
  • Come early in the day or in the dry season, when you see the most animals and it is more bearable.

Common mistakes

  • Coming at the height of summer and underestimating the heat, humidity and mosquitoes.
  • Coming only for the alligators. The wide sawgrass landscape and the birdlife are just as appealing.
  • Disturbing the wildlife or getting too close to alligators, always keep your distance.
