Comparison

Zion or Bryce Canyon

Two of Utah's most beautiful parks, barely ninety minutes apart, yet they could hardly be more different. If time is short and you have to choose, this should help.

Zion Nationalpark
Bryce Canyon
Landscape
A narrow, green canyon with huge red walls. You stand at the bottom and look up.
A wide amphitheatre full of hoodoos, those fine stone spires. You stand at the rim and look down.
Hiking
Spectacular and partly demanding, such as Angels Landing or the Narrows straight through the water.
More manageable. The Navajo Loop and Queens Garden fit comfortably into a few hours.
Altitude and climate
Lower down, and the canyon gets genuinely hot in midsummer.
Much higher and often pleasantly cool. Even in summer the mornings can be crisp.
Time needed
At least a full day, with the mandatory shuttle in high season.
Half a day to a full day covers the highlights well.

In short

Zion is the more dramatic, more physical experience. Bryce is unique and easier to take in quickly. If you want to hike, Zion is the call. If you want an unrivalled view without much effort, take Bryce.

The best part: you do not really have to choose. The two are so close that they fit into almost any Southwest route together.
